No Martini, No Party

Summary: missing scene between 8.04 and 8.05 (spoilers for both).
Characters: Wilson, Foreman.
Rating: general.
Warning: mention of alcohol abuse.
Word count: ~350.

Note: fic born of a PM remark by [livejournal.com profile] luridlurker, who insisted that Wilson must have noticed what was going on when they replaced his wall with a garage door.

"It's about House, right?"

Foreman's eyes are a sufficient answer, as he sits down in one of the visitors' chairs. They are more expensive than Cuddy's, more elegant, and less comfortable.

"What did he do this time?"

"Look at this first."

The Dean pushes forward a sheet of paper. One with few words and fewer numbers, and yet very interesting.

"Twenty thousand dollars for remodeling the long-term oncology care facility. I spent years begging Cuddy for this, and she always refused claiming it would not change the survival rates. You must have an outrageous request."

"I do. Not mine, but of the donor whose money will enable me to carry out your favorite project."

Wilson recognizes the signature on the check in Foreman's hands, so similar to the one he received just two hours ago. His breath itches as he counts the zeroes. "Where did House get all that money? And what does he want from me?"

"You could call it optimism, or insider trading. He won a big bet, and now wants me to replace part of the dividing wall between your offices with some kind of garage door."

"And where am I supposed to work while they do this?"

"You won't even notice if you don't come to work too early. You'll just have the cleaning staff around every morning."

Wilson stops and thinks. Not that House ever had problems pestering him in the past, even without direct access to his office. "Do I get just a library, or also the books?"

Foreman smiles, now. A satisfied administrator's smile. "Some books. Glad to hear you agree."

Wilson stands up when an insisting beep calls his attention. "This must be Johnny wanting to say goodbye. Sorry, I have to go." He's already at the door when Foreman's voice stops him.

"House knows I was going to ask you, but can you pretend to be surprised in front of his team?"

"If it's not too embarassing."

"I don't see why it should be. Especially if you like Martini."

Years have gone by, but the memory of a whole day spent kneeling in the bathroom, his esophagus in flames, hasn't faded at all. Of House holding his forehead, cleaning his mouth and making sure the banana bag infusion remained in place. Laughing and teasing him.

"No, I don't."

The door closes behind him. Foreman's smile fades slowly, then returns as he decides to have a webcam installed on Wilson's side too.

It seems very Foreman to have expensive but uncomfortable chairs, I like that little detail. Cuddy should have thought of the camera years ago (although I'm sure House would catch onto the camera pretty quick and probably use it to his own advantage)

I do like the idea that Wilson had to agree to the door, and that he knew about it.

As House noticed, money has been spent on Foreman's office. I can't believe he wants his visitors to be comfortable :).
I wouldn't put it past Foreman to have at least two cameras installed on House's side, so he can find the easier one(s) and tape a picture of a male hairy ass in front of it/them.
I think I got the idea of the camera from something you wrote anyway :).

I really liked this...especially the idea that Wilson knew about the door. I wondered how that could have escaped his notice, too.

Nice job, my dear.

Thank you so much. I liked the Foreman/Wilson interaction implied by the new wall and wanted to flesh it out a bit.

[identity profile] lovemywilson.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I like this! He had to have known. To me his reaction seems to indicate it.

[identity profile] damigella-314.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm such a bad person that what I felt the need to explain is why he would refuse a drink from House (would you? Especially with the smile House gave him?)
And yes, I think he must have known, but I like to imagine Foreman told him (since he must have known as well).

[identity profile] brindlewolf.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Excellent! I like that Wilson knew and agreed in advance. I also like that House is doing good things with the money he made, and Wilson remembering House taking care of him when he was drunk and sick (while still staying IC) was a nice touch. ♥

Thank you! I think there can never be enough TLC from House to Wilson. Plus, I needed to explain why Wlson wouldn't want a drink (of course he may just not like Martini so much - I don't very much care for it).

Nice way of cleaning up some of the inconsistencies in the episode:)

[identity profile] damigella-314.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Some, because cleaning up all inconsistencies would be too much work. But I've decided to view the positive side, fix the fixable and ignore the rest (e.g., enjoy the banter leading to the discovery of the kids on the balcony and ignoring the fact that a Department Head had enough time to spare to work as babysitter - Wilson pushing the double stroller was also too cute).
I think I might have learned from you :).

I'm trying to give the show some slack. It's first and foremost entertainment. No show on TV is completely realistic or completely accurate. I recall thinking before season 4 that some things that went on at PPTH were a little out there, and they had better writers at that time. So, yeah. This is last season and I intend to enjoy it because once House is over I'm going to miss it terribly and be in a depressed funk for a while.

[identity profile] damigella-314.livejournal.com 2011-11-15 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you sure it's the last season? I keep hoping it isn't, although it is likely indeed.

once House is over I'm going to miss it terribly and be in a depressed funk for a while.

I definitely am optimistic that we will have fanfic for a very, very long time. Plus, I can always re-read and re-watch. The only thing I would miss would be the end of this comm, which I found very welcoming (it's not the same for everyone, I've probably been very very lucky).

I agree that Wilson could have known about the wall/door. It didn't seem to surprise him a bit, and I think he was saying no to the martini, not the wall.

Very funny ending. I think a camera on both of them would be Foreman's smartest move yet.

Twenty thousand dollars for remodeling the long-term oncology care facility

I hate to burst your bubble, but 20k would probably remodel a large bathroom or a small kitchen in the US!

[identity profile] damigella-314.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
i keep forgetting they're not Euros :) and you don't cheat on taxes.
Thanks, I'll let it stay and imagine the remodeling is just a paint job, new Ikea furniture, and a very few books (the rest will be donations by the parents of the healed, and of the dead).
The camera is unfortunately not my idea. I'm so fried with my memory I can't even remember who I nicked it from, probably several people. But it was too good to oass up.

Very satisfying, full of good detail. I know, too, that Wilson knew all about it, only I figured he assented to prank the team, because House WANTED it.

Very nice about the vomit and Housecare.

Thanks.

What a great icon!
Thank you, and I do like the term Housecare.

[identity profile] resm.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just going to go ahead and believe that this is exactly what happened, but I agree, I think Wilson would have had to have known. He was too calm when the wall went up not to have been in on it. I could imagine him insisting that so long as the builders work overnight, it'd be marginally grand lol. Thanks for sharing!

[identity profile] damigella-314.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course I like to think Wilson is secretly happy that House wants to share an office ;).
Thank you for commenting!

[identity profile] yarroway.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Wilson had to must have known and agreed. How could he possible have missed workmen taking out a wall in his office? I took the 'no' to refer to the martini (did it bother anyone that House and his team were all drinking in the middle of a workday?).

[identity profile] damigella-314.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope it wasn't the middle of the workday, that would be so unelegant - Martini is an evening drink. My father used to drink a quarter liter wine with lunch every day and he still worked through the afternoon, so I might have a slanted perception of how much one can drink before calling it a day.

[identity profile] chocolate-frapp.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
nicely done as always. Foreman doesn't get enough to do in a lot of fics and i think he's awesome.

[identity profile] damigella-314.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Foreman is awesome. I just wish I could people who "get him" better than I do would write him more. And Season 8 Foreman I love more than ever.
