Doing Nothing Is Hard

Summary: "Power wears out those who don't have it". Wilson is powerless: a drabble.
Rating: gen.
Spoilers: not very explicit for S7.
Word Count: 100.
Note: includes Sekret Woid #5 Stress.
Disclaimer: as usual.

Wilson's back hurt. He tried to find a comfortable position, but couldn't, despite his wrist being finally healed. Sarah jumped away from his chest, bothered by his restlessness.
His life really sucked recently: work was exhausting, he got heartburn from anything spicy, his migraines kept flaring up.
His psychotherapist had diagnosed stress and suggested resigning from Head of Oncology.
Wilson got up, tried to stretch a bit, toyed with the idea of playing squash again. Indeed, there was no more reason not to.
He looked at his stress’ source. Silent on the bedside table, his cellphone seemed to mock him.

Oh, my heart! "there was no more reason not to" - true...
Wonderful little piece!

Beautiful yet painful. I sense a bit of bitterness in the line: Wilson got up, tried to stretch a bit, toyed with the idea of playing squash again. Indeed, there was no more reason not to.

Was that intended or am I reading into this something you hadn't intended? I could imagine a little bitterness being there for Wilson. It's a simple example of everything he has sacrificed over the years for his friendship with House (in this case, giving up activities that House caouldn't do post-infarction so House wouldn't feel bad) for apparently nothing; House deserted him and Wilson is alone, not knowing if House is even still alive.
Brava!

Powerful drabble. Poor Wilson is a grab bag of symptoms, but stress will do that. Unfortunately the doctor who could heal him is out of town. :(

Gah! Just the image of Wilson so restless that even the cat moves off of him is so pathetically sad.

That the therapist suggested he give up his job... when he only has that left is depressing.

Just to focus on one detail, I really liked the bit about heartburn from spicy food being part of why Wilson's sucks - with the way that cooking/food is such a stress reliever for him, I can totally see how that ailment is making everything just that much worse.

And liked the note of bitterness when he contemplates that there's no reason why he shouldn't take up squash again.

Nice little piece!

Poor Wilson trying to put his life back together alone ... <3

The line about taking squash up again is a good one. it really is a poignant way to express where Wilson used to be with House, versus where he is now.

Nicely angsty. :)

aww! poor Wilson.

Thank you so much! (hands over defibrillator).

I hadn't it in mind when I wrote it, but there must be bitterness: it would be human and reasonable. Mostly there is a void, a lack of purpose in Wilson's life. All he wants is to be there for House, and he can't.

not knowing if House is even still alive.
That hurts more than anything else imho.

Thank you for the very perceptive remarks!

Poor Wilson is a grab bag of symptoms
I think Wilson's brain is trying to make the pain physical, because it's easier to deal with.

Thank you for your comment!

he only has that left
It's very sad. I think all the therapist means is to give up the Head of Oncology position, not the job altogether. But yes, it would be admitting that his life is a complete failure: no wives, no friend, and a spoiled career.

Thank you!

with the way that cooking/food is such a stress reliever for him

Definitely. Plus, it was something he used to share with House. Now he can't even eat many of their favorite take-out foods, or cooks some of the recipes they learned together.

Thank you so much for the comment!

Trying without success. Thank you for your comment!

Poor Wilson. Losing House must be so hard.
Thank you so much.
